With a squawk and a snap of string, something fluffy tumbled out of the morning mist and crashed into Arjun's washing line. Pegs flew like startled sparrows. When the line stopped bouncing, a sky-calf dangled at the edge of his tiny island, wrapped in three of his socks, its long kite tail fluttering over the drop.
Arjun untangled it slowly, humming until its trembling stopped. Its wool smelled of rain and warm bread. Beyond the wind-looms spinning clouds into ribbons, he spotted its herd drifting away on a distant island chain.
Three rope bridges lay between here and there, each swaying like a hammock in a gale. Arjun tucked the calf under one arm, gripped the rope with his other hand, and did not look down. Not once.
