Inside this book

The words of each page, to read along or read aloud.

  1. Page 1

The church clock across the harbour had barely finished its twelfth chime when the lighthouse beam blinked out, leaving the water as black as spilled ink. Ada set down her tweezers at the workshop window and listened. Beneath the hush of the waves came a sound she knew better than her own heartbeat: a tick, soft and uneven, drifting from the silent lamp-room.

  2. Page 2

She packed her smallest tools into her apron and climbed the hundred and twelve iron steps. In the lamp-room, the great brass gears that turned the lens had stopped dead, their teeth clogged with twigs and downy grey feathers.
